NAME: Sayaka Maizono.
AGE: Later teens, but with two years of memories missing as a result of the Killing Game. For headcanon reference, I go with 17/19.
CANON: Dangan Ronpa.
CANON HISTORY: Wiki Link!
CANON PERSONALITY: Sayaka Maizono is the kind of girl you'd expect to see sometime in your life. She's an outgoing person, first and foremost; she can talk to just about anyone easily and has a completely pleasant demeanor. She's light-hearted, smiles easily, and people often leave a conversation with her on a good note. Never too harsh, nor too demanding, but also no simple doormat. She's a perfect balance of what people might believe a girl should be; kind but firm, fun but serious. She may simply be perfect in some people's eye. She's the sweet, supportive young lady with a bright future ahead of her because anything less would be just tragic. She's a shoulder to cry on when you need it, there for you in all regards. She does everything she can to inspire those around her, and one wouldn't think there's anything bad underneath it.
They'd be surprised to find that a lot of that is simply a facade.
Sayaka acts the way she feels she should act, for the most part. She's nice because it's expected of her to be so, and she goes with expediencies. She can't let herself slip up for even a moment; what if she said something wrong? She doesn't want to think of what the consequences would be--she follows up every slip with an almost instant shift back to a smile. In her mind, if you smile, no one will question you further about previous troubles--if nothing else, it seemed to work well against her classmates. She's a girl who knows her part and plays it. It's pretty much her 'default' state, her public persona. It's how anyone knows her, and that's really the sole way it should be in her eyes.
Of course, in truth, she tends to be a little bit of an awkward person as well when alone with someone. She's a bit more of a reacting sort, than a domineering personality. When she's alone with Naegi, she finds it hard to think of something to talk about that isn't her dream. It's not for lack of trying, but...really, her dreams and her memories are all she has. Deep down, Sayaka Maizono is actually a very, very hollow girl. She became her public persona to the cost of developing a better coping mechanism for the world around her. A world that, at it's core, is competitive and always seeking new blood. She clings to the things that she can call her own, and makes herself into what others wish her to be. It plays into a surprisingly analytical nature on Sayaka's end, observing others and becoming someone who can be an appealing person based off her observations. It comes from the way people act in her profession; keeping their records spotless so the media can't go after them for something unsavory. It's also where the 'I can read minds' schtick comes from--she can't literally read minds, thankfully, but her intuitions tend to be spot on in guessing people.
More than anything else, Sayaka struggles with wanting to be noticed and adored; her father was rarely around when she was young, which caused her to latch onto the world of idols. She achieved her dream through blood, sweat, tears, and more terrible things when needed. Sayaka's dream is quite literally her world. She certainly is willing to do anything to protect that dream at all costs, even if the cost may very well be terrible. Not that anyone should know this, in her mind--she doesn't want to lose their approval, after all! She would never want anyone to know that, lest she be seen as a terrible person for what she'd be willing to do. She literally thrives on staying in people's good grace. As long as she stays there, she won't be seen in a negative light and she'll be able to keep her status quo. Her status quo is everything--her fellow idols, who she bonded with even more than her father, are worth more than life itself to her.
What was she willing to do to achieve her dream? Well, the plot of Dangan Ronpa revolves around a bear known as Monobear trapping her and fourteen other students of various talents within the school they've been meaning to go to. The bear says that the only way to get out is by murdering someone else and getting away with it. To her credit, Sayaka didn't simply jump at the chance to murder the first chance she got--it wasn't until a motive DVD showing her idol friends unconscious or even dead on the ground without her that she plotted murder. In her eyes, it was the only option now; she thought up a plan nearly on the spot and was willing to set it into motion just as quickly. She certainly wouldn't have done it if the circumstances were different, but with things as they were? She was willing to accept it as the only option. Her status quo, her livelyhood even, was at stake, and nothing else mattered in that moment. Not the fourteen other students; not their lives, motivations, livelyhoods; not even the promises she made made beforehand. Much like a bull who's seen red, she had her sights set on getting out.
...Yeah, to say her moral compass took a nosedive the very second her dream was threatened would be a rather extreme understatement. Her dream really is that important to her, which can lead her to make impulsive, rash decisions. Said plot for murder wound up taking a turn south when her intended victim forced her to hide, and then came into where she was hiding to finish the job she'd started. She may be able to plan on her feet if needed, but that isn't to say that she's flawless at it; the whole picture doesn't come into play until it's too late. Said accidental murderer, by the way? A super high school level baseball player. She did not choose her victim smartly at all, and may have simply chosen him because she figured she could charm him before attacking. Sayaka is not exactly a smart woman. So much for those good intuitions, huh? It's pretty clear that the very second Sayaka feels threatened, she will react wildly.
Despite a good portion of her personality being a facade, it isn't to say that the kindness she displays isn't genuine. She may struggle with her need for attention and this could very well be some way she tries to cope with it, but when her dream isn't at stake? Sayaka is probably one of the sweetest people on the planet, and she gets genuine pleasure our of being nice to others. She's still a teenaged girl at heart, not a cold blooded sociopath. Sayaka Maizono is a girl who puts every single ounce of stock in her dreams, and what others wish her to be. In that order. She's perfectly capable of being nice, and that's what one will see if they present no threat.
All in all, Sayaka is a very messed up individual living in a tower of glass that threatens to break at the slightest provocation. And may anyone help the one who looks like they have a stone.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Sayaka's main skills lie in singing and dancing; as the person chosen to be the Super High School Level Idol, she has to excel in all aspects of idoldom, and be the absolute best in her field. Those skills come with the field, to follow the dances that they create and sing their hits in front of crowds of adoring fans. Sayaka definitely excels in that regard; memorizing many different dances to perform for her fans, singing the songs they've so painstakingly crafted, and inspiring the fans around them. It's simply to be expected, for her at least.
Of course, Sayaka herself is rather adept at reading people. Reading their intentions, what they might be thinking, and responding accordingly. Usually with a little joke that she has 'good intuitions'. She can read the air pretty well at least, and respond accordingly to it. Or say something utterly absurd to clear the air, like insinuating that a fighting duo are like sisters...
Weirdly enough, she's actually pretty good at cooking as well. As an idol, it would definitely be assumed that she doesn't have to do that all too often, as her managers probably handle that aspect to make sure they stay healthy. Not Sayaka, though! She happens to enjoy it...even if she says that her special is 'chili oil'.

AU NAME: Sayaka Maizono.
AU AGE: 20.
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Her blue hair is dyed, so the black roots may come out every now and again. Otherwise, pretty much the same!
AU HISTORY:
- Her parents moved from Japan to Recollé when Sayaka was very young. A young pair of parents, they wanted to seek out their own opportunities in the world alongside their new addition to the family. Sayaka was far too young to remember the move, and pretty much grew up knowing that Recollé was her home. Everything has been fairly set in stone for her throughout her life, and her parents have never considered moving elsewhere.
- She had a fairly normal school life, all things considered! Sayaka passed her classes easily, was a friendly and cooperative person, and genuinely enjoyed learning. At the same time, though, she wasn't exactly full out passionate about anything. If anything, she had a hard time finding things that could catch her interest at all. Dolls weren't interesting, school subjects were done simply to pass them, and everything else just seemed boring. It wasn't anyone's fault, but it made her a little hard to approach at first because she didn't know what she wanted.
- Not until she entered middle school, that is. The choir caught her attention rather easily, but she didn't exactly have a talent for singing. What she did have a talent for was another choice of field; band. She picked up the trombone very easily, and it's stuck with her since. Something about music simply gripped her interest entirely, and she felt like she'd finally found her calling. It helped her properly connect with the people around her, finally understanding herself and how powerful an interest could be. If anything, it helped her realize her dream to be in an orchestra. Music became Sayaka's passion in a big way, and she devoted herself to it entirely. Her family was supportive, especially after seeing their daughter perform so well and so passionately. Sayaka practiced at every waking hour she could manage, and she genuinely became good at it. Music was fun, music was interesting, and it made her happy to be able to perform in front of other proud parents and play so wonderfully.
- In high school, Sayaka started to see a lot more of her own independence shine through. She still kept herself busy with the band, but she began to take chances that earned her a tiny bit of disapproval. The biggest one came from dyeing her hair, however. It was a bet that Sayaka decided to take a chance on, and she lost pretty terribly. Still, she actually grew to adore the hair color and actually began maintaining it as her new 'look' of sorts. She began to take more stock in her independence, and it saw her making decisions for herself. She was an independent girl, and she'd take the world by storm. Even when she graduated, she had all of her choices ready and set to go as soon as she got out.
- As it stands, she's currently enrolled in Recolle University to pursue a major in music. She's well on her way to becoming the band geek of her dreams. It's certainly interesting, living in the dorm without her parents guidance, but she's very happy to have the chance to pursue her passion to the fullest. Of course, she's also got some practicality under her belt; she works at Expressive part-time, to save up money for the future. And to chat with people, because good lord does she love to talk...
AU PERSONALITY:
- Where Sayaka in-canon tended to fake her way through just about every aspect of her life, her reincarnation is incredibly genuine and upbeat. She had her parents alongside her in this life, and it shows in how Sayaka interacts with others. Far more willing to express herself through what she does, and unwilling to give it anything less than her best! She's a more genuine source of kindness, rather than the almost doll-like hollowness that made her up.
- Sayaka retains a lot of her canon traits--kindness, politeness, and a pretty much ethereal appearance. Well...sort of on that last part. Due to growing up without heading into the idol industry, Sayaka didn't see any problems in being herself with others. She's not an ethereal angel that can do no wrong anymore; she's just a girl, and proud of it.
- ...she is still kind of fervently focused on her music, but not to an extent where she'd kill others over it, thankfully. She's still got a competitive fire in her that makes her strive to succeed, but it's not quite to the life or death extent that she had in her previous life. She's going to be the best goshdarn trombone player in the orchestra, but she's not gonna step on others in order to do it. She certainly maintains a hyper focus on her interest, to be certain.
- Still, as a result of her career feeling far less competitive and far less of an explicit need to be noticed due to the way she was raised, Sayaka is far more laid back and much, much less awkward to talk to. She speaks easy due to having more time for herself and spending that time socializing, and is far more chirpy and bright. She's more genuinely warm, rather than the forced sort of schtick that Sayaka molded herself into.
- ...it does come with a couple downsides--she lacks the hyper vigilance that her former life had, and makes up for it with a slight deficit in her so-called intuitions. She's a little bit more naive in a people sense, and more willing to trust others at their word. She hasn't lost all of her self preservation, but she lacks the wariness that her former life had of others. She's no mind reader, and actually has a little more trouble reading people's intentions due to that lack of focus on others.
- The one huge thing is that her moral compass is far, far more rigid. Things like what she did at Hope's Peak would simply be things that she wouldn't consider nowadays, because she's been raised by parents who gave her far better direction and more weight to 'what's right and wrong'.
- She's got a lot more independence than her canon counterpart; whereas her canon self is reliant on others to feel like she exists at all due to her upbringing, her reincarnated upbringing was far more pleasant, had a lot more parent child interaction, and gave her a lot more value in who she was rather than what she had to be. While it took her a bit to realize herself, there was absolutely no stopping her once she finally did. Sayaka's more able to make her own decisions, and a lot less willing to bend to others at the cost of herself.
